About Winnebago County, Wisconsin
At Home Among the Smartest Places to Live

Welcome to Winnebago County, Wisconsin!

Winnebago County is one of 72 counties in Wisconsin. The estimated population of Winnebago County in 2004 was 159,008. The county was named for the Indian tribe which, along with the Ho-Chunks nation, Sauk, Menomonee and others, initially inhabited this region in the east-central part of the state. The county is in the Oshkosh-Neenah metro area and claims Oshkosh as its county seat.

Since its settlement in the mid-1830's, Oshkosh has grown from a sleepy country village to what it is today. The Oshkosh metro area was named one of the "50 Smart Places to Live" in the United States by Kiplinger's Personal Finance June 2006 issue. Rankings were based on the amount and quality of affordable housing, a reasonable cost of living, quality of life, access to health care and a strong economy. In a 2005 study, Oshkosh ranked 8th safest among 330 metro areas in the U.S. (source: Safest City and Metropolitan Area Awards compiled by Morgan Quitno Press).

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Oshkosh was second only to Milwaukee in population in the state. It was the largest city in the Fox River Valley. The Inland Lakes Yachting Association held its annual regatta at the Oshkosh Yacht Club on Lake Winnebago and, following its construction in 1883, the Grand Opera House was visited by many of the biggest stars in the theater, vaudeville and lecture circuits, making Oshkosh the cultural center of the Fox Valley.

Any talk about Wisconsin counties that stand out with events, attractions and reasons to visit, will include Winnebago County on the short list of the best. Winnebago County is known for its tremendous number of lakeshore communities and water recreational opportunities on the Winnebago system. This system includes Lake Winnebago, Poygan, Butte de Morts and the Fox and Wolf Rivers. Not many Wisconsin counties can claim to have as much waterfront and friendly waterway fun as Winnebago does.

Winnebago County not only offers terrific outdoor activities but great shopping and dining as well as a fine variety of museums, art galleries and performing art centers. Culture takes center stage throughout the Fox Valley region and has long been a lure for new residents in search of home that marries business, nature, history and the arts in compelling and inspiring ways. Winnebago County has all of that and then some. The Inland Lakes Yachting Association has held its annual regatta at the Oshkosh Yacht Club on Lake Winnebago for many years and, since its construction in 1883, the Grand Opera House has been visited by many of the biggest stars in the theater, vaudeville and lecture circuits, making Oshkosh the cultural center of the Fox Valley.

This area is also known for its luxurious parks, inviting and intriguing western rural communities and national events that bring huge crowds into the area each year. One of these events is the EAA AirVenture, the world's largest general aviation gathering. This event hosts 700,000 attendees and more than 10,000 airplanes each year, including 2,500 show planes. Another event putting Oshkosh on the map is Country USA, a world-class entertainment event featuring country music’s biggest and hottest headliners each June. The Ducks Unlimited Great Outdoors Festival also comes to roost each year at the EAA grounds in Oshkosh, bringing thousands of dedicated outdoorsman together to celebrate all that is great about the outdoors each August.
