About Winneconne, Wisconsin Welcome to The Sovereign State of Winneconne
Welcome to Winneconne, Wisconsin!

Located within the town that shares its name, the Village of Winneconne, Wisconsin, is a comfortable but energetic bedroom community nestled outside of Oshkosh in Winnebago County and between the wide and refreshing inland Lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte Des Morts. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,401. The Wolf River runs through both the village and surrounding town.
Because of the abundance of natural water in the area, Winneconne is surrounded by rich farm land and progressive farms that contribute to the community's economic well-being. Modern, well-equipped farms give much to the economic climate of Winneconne and play an important role in the growth and development of the area.
Located in the very heart of a four-season recreational wonderland, Winneconne is a clean, well-kept community with wide streets, comfortable homes, beautiful parks, modern schools, and attractive businesses. Winneconne is situated at the intersection of two proud rivers; the Wolf and Fox - together with their connecting lakes and waterways. Although best known for its excellent fishing, other water attractions also draw interest throughout the year. Nearby Lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts offer superior outdoor experiences of all types as well as rendering numerous attractive locales for lakeside homes, cottages and estates. Winneconne’s Waterfront Park offers relaxing or exciting venues sure to please everyone. Residents and their guests regularly enjoy live music and a full calendar of events at Winneconne’s newest park located on First Street on the beautiful Wolf River. Boat slips are open to transient boaters to dock and experience the many Main Street businesses. Fisherman enjoy the new fishing deck on the south side of the Winneconne Bridge spanning the Wolf River.
Winneconne, Wisconsin is a four-season outdoor recreation paradise. Winneconne becomes an amalgam of activity each Spring during the famous walleyed pike run in the Wolf River. People gather from all over Wisconsin and many from outside the state for this annual event. The blossoming of pink, purple, blue and white lilacs signal summer's arrival and the time for more fishing - combined with pleasure boating, houseboating, water skiing, sailing, canoeing, swimming, sun bathing and every other conceivable summer-related sport including softball, golf, camping, picnicing, tennis, and hiking. Autumn celebrates the return of duck hunting, pheasant hunting, football, hiking, hickory nutting, deer hunting, to say nothing of more fishing. And then there is winter - and time for snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiing, curling, and even down hill skiing less than an hour's drive away.
Winneconne residents can also be playfully cantankerous, as evidenced by a 1967 plot to exact revenge against the state for inadvertently leaving the village unnamed on its official Wisconsin road map. A secret committee formulated a plan to secede from Wisconsin, set up toll gates on local roads and begin annexation of nearby communities (starting with the city of Oshkosh) to form a Sovereign State of Winneconne. A backup secession plan - annexation by another state (preferably one with a more agreeable year-round climate) was sought. As the deadline for secession approached, then-Wisconsin Governor Warren P. Knowles entered into negotiations with the former village officials; as a result, Winneconne rejoined the State of Wisconsin. An annual Sovereign State Days celebration still commemorates that fanciful event.
Winneconne, Wisconsin, thus offers a style of living that ardently encourages time for family and community. The community is proud of it small-town, rural lifestyle, promoting stewardship of the land and the preservation of open space and clean air. Children savor growing up in this clean, safe community where they can walk or bike around town. Older children have the opportunity to work at summer jobs in the Fox Valley area tourist industry. For their parents, Winneconne is a civically active community with over 20 local organizations and clubs encompassing the arts, politics, community and individual betterment for young and old alike. The result is that Winneconne is a great place to visit and an even better place to live.
